Mendoza is the capital of the Mendoza province in Argentina and a significant hub for wine production and distribution in the country. While it’s a renowned destination for wine enthusiasts, there’s plenty to enjoy in Mendoza beyond wine.
Located near the Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley districts, at the foot of the Andean mountain range, Mendoza benefits from high altitudes perfect for growing top-quality wines. The province is responsible for nearly two-thirds of Argentina’s wine production, with some wineries, like Norton, producing upwards of 10 million liters annually.
However, Mendoza offers more than just exceptional wines. As a university town, it boasts a vibrant, young atmosphere and bustling nightlife. The city center features a wide boulevard lined with fantastic international bars and restaurants, while a massive park flanks one side of downtown, offering beautiful hiking opportunities nearby.
During our visit, we explored the city and its stunning landscapes. Here are some highlights to help you make the most of your trip to Mendoza, Argentina.
Mendoza is famous for its delicious, affordable, world-class wines, especially the Malbec variety, known for its dark fruit flavors and velvety texture. Besides Malbec, the region produces excellent Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and more. A great way to sample these wines is through a wine tasting and tour at one of the approximately 1,000 vineyards in the area. These tours, typically lasting around 4 hours, include guided walks through vineyards, production facilities, fermentation areas, and cellars, often accompanied by fantastic lunches and wine pairings.
Though prices for tours in Mendoza can be high compared to other wine regions, the experience is well worth it. We highly recommend wine tastings, pairings, and vineyard tours to fully appreciate the exceptional food and wine offered here.
Norton Winery
This vineyard, owned by Swarovski, provided one of our favorite wine tours in Argentina. Besides tasting the phenomenal 2012 La Colonia Malbec, the experience included activities like pruning vines, collecting grapes, and watching the crushing process. We even created our own wine blend. Norton offers 12 different experiences, such as “Working My Land,” “Winemaker For a Day,” and “The High-End,” with the latter featuring tastings of Norton’s finest wines.
Ruca Malen
Ruca Malen provides excellent wine tastings and tours. The regular tour includes a visit to the resident garden, production plant, bottling factory, fermentation tanks, laboratory, and cellar, followed by a seven-course wine pairing menu. This immersive experience features fresh, locally grown ingredients and bottomless Gran Reserva wine.
Trapiche
Although we didn’t manage to visit Trapiche, one of Latin America’s largest wine producers, it’s worth noting that they offer a 900 peso lunch and tasting option. For those on a budget, visiting wine shops in town can be an affordable alternative to winery tours. Our favorite spots include places with delicious wines and great food, like rib-eye steak and empanadas.
For day trips around Mendoza, options include:
– Aconcagua National Park: Rent a car to explore the breathtaking scenery, with the choice of a full access hike or a shorter, more affordable trail.
– Rafting on the Mendoza River: Experience Class III rapids with a stunning Andes backdrop.
– Termas Chacueta: Visit the hot springs for relaxation and muscle relief.
Mendoza’s city attractions focus more on enjoying good food, wine, and outdoor activities than traditional sightseeing. However, notable spots include:
– San Martin Park: A vast park perfect for walking, cycling, or relaxing, featuring sculptures and a manmade river.
– Independence Plaza: A beautiful plaza with benches, ideal for relaxing and people-watching.
– Various museums offer art, history, and culture for those interested.
To navigate the city and reach nearby wineries, options include:
– Hop-on/Hop-off Bus Vitivinicola: Visit three wineries a day with this service, though additional winery tour costs apply.
– Car Rental: A flexible and economical choice for exploring Mendoza and its surroundings, especially if shared with other travelers.
– Biking: Rent bikes in Maipu for an affordable and enjoyable way to visit local wineries.
Mendoza surprised us with its energetic city vibe, beautiful park, and nearby hiking opportunities. Renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility and cost savings. Even if wine isn’t your main interest, Mendoza has plenty to offer for a memorable stay.
