I spent three months living in Naivasha, traveling around, and found it to be one of the best places to explore in Kenya. With its lakes, wildlife sanctuaries, campsites, and game parks, the town offers spectacular sights and places to visit, making it ideal for both weekend trips and fun adventures.
Naivasha has been a welcoming place for visitors since the late 19th century. Initially populated by wealthy European settlers encouraged by the colonial administration, the area also became known for its hedonistic Happy Valley set. The arrival of Imperial Airways flying boats further boosted tourism in the region. Visiting historical places like La Belle Inn Hotel and Lake Naivasha Country Club can unfold some of this history, along with exploring Joy Adamson’s work at the Elsamere Conservation Center.
Hell’s Gate National Park, with its breathtaking landscapes and opportunities for cycling past wildlife, became a regular weekend spot for me during my stay. Cycling in the park allows a closer connection to nature, and a ride from the main gate to Ol-Jorwa gorge reveals various geological and natural wonders.
Lake Naivasha, a tranquil freshwater lake, offers beautiful scenery, wildlife, and bird species, making it perfect for a relaxing boat trip. This can also lead you to Crescent Island, a hidden gem known for bird-watching and wildlife viewing.
For hiking enthusiasts, Mount Longonot National Park is a must. The well-marked trail takes about five hours to complete, offering stunning views of Lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley. I recommend starting early, carrying water, and taking breaks along the hike.
The Olkaria Geothermal Spa, located inside Hell’s Gate National Park, provides a therapeutic swimming experience with water temperatures between 30°C and 40°C, making it an ideal spot to unwind after exploring.
Crater Lake, located within a private game sanctuary, offers opportunities for spotting wildlife and bird species. A nature walk around the rim of the crater takes about two hours and can be enjoyed with a guide or through a tour arrangement.
Wine enthusiasts can visit Leleshwa Winery, a unique vineyard in Kenya that offers a romantic setting for wine tasting and tours. Meanwhile, Eburru Forest offers a serene hiking experience through contrasting landscapes and clear streams, ending with incredible views of the Great Rift Valley.
Camp Carnelley’s is a favorite camping spot, located conveniently close to various attractions like Hell’s Gate National Park. It features a great restaurant, boat riding, fishing, and bird-watching activities. Similarly, Karagita Beach is a popular spot for boat trips and enjoying local fried fish.
Sanctuary Farm allows closer interactions with wildlife and offers the options of exploring on foot or horseback. Lake Oloiden is another camping gem, known for its flocks of flamingos and surrounding flower farms.
