Situated on the southern-central coast of Cuba along the Caribbean, Cienfuegos is a must-visit destination. With its colorful facades, wide streets, and charming French colonial architecture, it rightly earns the nickname “Pearl of the South.”
Founded by the French in 1819, Cienfuegos stands out from the rest of Cuba. Make sure to add this picturesque town to your travel itinerary when planning a trip to Cuba.
To get there, consider taking the ViAzul bus, which provides a reliable transport network across Cuba. These buses are modern and clean but have strong air conditioning, so bring a sweater or top. From Havana, two buses leave daily for Trinidad and stop at Cienfuegos halfway, taking around 4.5 hours. During the high season, these buses fill up quickly, so buy your tickets in advance and have your passport ready when purchasing. The ViAzul bus station in Havana is in the Nuevo Vedado area, opposite the Zoo entrance. From Trinidad, the journey takes about 1.5 hours. However, avoid traveling on Sundays, as buses might take longer routes, as we discovered the hard way when it took us around 4 hours via Santa Clara.
If you’re considering the train from Havana, be prepared for a long and potentially unreliable journey, taking about 10.5 hours. Driving is another option, but be cautious as the roads may not be well signposted, and some can end abruptly. Alternatively, you can fly to Jaime González Airport in Cienfuegos from Miami, USA, but be aware of the strict visa restrictions.
Travel insurance is mandatory for all travelers to Cuba. You may be asked to show proof of insurance upon arrival.
