Exploring the Caribbean Paradise: A Journey from Grenada to Carriacou

Exploring the Caribbean Paradise: A Journey from Grenada to Carriacou

After more than two months, we suddenly had neighbors at our beachside cottage. Peter and Julia, Spare’s owners, had returned from their trip to take back their home (which we had been using as a blogging office and yoga studio) and relieve us of our pet-sitting duties.

Unlike most people who might be excited for a break from work, we actually missed Spare, the dog we had been looking after. While he was back on his comfy doggy bed in his usual home, we found ourselves longing for him. In Grenada, Spare would spend the day with us while we blogged, lay on his back during our yoga sessions, and always be around for pets, hugs, and kisses.

Poor Spare was totally confused about why we were still hanging around even though his owners were back. He looked to Julia and Peter for approval before coming into our house or going on walks with us, as if he was asking, “Is it okay if I go?”

After two weeks of this confusing situation and getting to know Peter and Julia better, it was time for us to leave. We gave our beloved Spare a final cuddle and said our goodbyes before boarding the Osprey Lines Limited ferry to start our two-week Caribbean holiday. We aimed to be on Bequia Island in St. Vincent & The Grenadines for my 30th birthday on June 26th, so we left Grenada on the 22nd.

Even though it was only 8:00 am, the sun was intense, so we decided to enjoy the ride from inside the boat rather than on the top deck. I usually get seasick, but the waters looked calm and welcoming as we settled in and looked out the window.

We cruised effortlessly over the turquoise sea, following the western Caribbean coastline of Grenada as we headed north to the island of Carriacou. Visiting Carriacou is one of the must-do activities in Grenada. Despite my fear of the ocean, I was anxious about the passageway between the two islands, a 50km open-sea crossing where rough Atlantic waters are expected. But since it was summertime, I was told the seas would be calm.

That was not true. As soon as we left the northern tip of Grenada behind, massive rolling swells appeared right when Nick decided to go on the top deck for a quick video. Life as a travel blogger can be quite the adventure!

After some time, I went outside to check on Nick. We shouted over the wind and carefully made our way back down and into the safety of the boat. The journey was supposed to take about 1½ hours, maybe 1¾ if the seas were rough. We ended up arriving in Carriacou over two hours later!

Taking the ferry was definitely an adventure, but I have to say, the Osprey boat did a great job getting us to Carriacou safely. It had a bathroom onboard, a helpful crew, and comfortable seats, which really helped when I needed to lie down. Despite the unusually wavy day, we were hopeful our ride back would be smoother. (Spoiler: It was completely calm on the return trip to Grenada.)

As we neared Carriacou’s harbor, the water calmed to glass and turned a clear turquoise. Sandy shores greeted us at the dock. As we stumbled down the streets to the Townhouse Guesthouse, we still felt like we were rocking on the ferry.

After checking in and seeing the relaxed streets, we knew this small Caribbean island would be a great place to unwind for a day before heading back to sea.

Stay tuned for more on our amazing vacation in the Caribbean paradise of St. Vincent & The Grenadines!
