As I’m sitting here writing, the wind is swaying the palm trees, Spare Dog is snoozing under the table, the sun is shining brightly, and little black birds are chirping outside.
We’ve called Grenada our Caribbean paradise for a bit over seven months now, but it’s almost time to move on to our next adventure. There are so many incredible things to do here that we feel we’ve barely experienced it all!
Staying in one place for this long allowed us to relax, focus, and really get serious about our laptop lifestyle and website. Living in Grenada has been eye-opening and life-changing in many ways.
We recently talked about why we love our location-independent lifestyle. Until living in this tropical paradise, we hadn’t fully embraced it. We had traveled a lot, but we never considered ourselves truly “location independent.”
We’ve been able to experience working whenever and wherever we want, and we’re totally hooked. Now that we know what it’s like to live abroad with just our laptops, we realize this is the lifestyle we want.
Our freelance writing career has finally taken off, and we believe the key was settling down temporarily, giving us time to reach out to various online companies. When we were moving every few days, we often didn’t have time to work on our website or write for other sites. Living in Grenada gave us the opportunity to create great content for various platforms, including Goats On The Road.
We’re thrilled to say that freelance writing has become our main source of income. We make enough money to travel, live comfortably, and even save a bit.
This was our first time house-sitting and pet-sitting abroad. We joined Trusted House Sitters in Uzbekistan, on a whim, feeling that it would be our next adventure. We received an amazing offer to take care of sweet Spare Dog in Grenada and couldn’t wait to get started. Though nervous at first, once we arrived and met the homeowners and Spare, we knew we’d made the right choice.
Pet-sitting has helped us save on travel and living expenses, especially since the cost of living in Grenada can be high. Not having to pay for accommodation has been a major benefit. This type of travel lets us live like locals and really experience the country. Plus, we’ve had the joy of having a pet, even with our nomadic lifestyle. Saying goodbye to Spare will be hard.
There’s something unique about living in a tropical country. The relaxed vibe, calming sea, peaceful jungle walks, and the slow-paced island time might frustrate some Westerners, but it’s something we could all learn from. Living in the Caribbean has taught us that we love being in quiet places surrounded by nature. It’s good for the soul, and we’ve both been so happy here. We now know we want to continue seeking peaceful and serene places.
Reflecting on the past seven months has been invaluable for figuring out the direction we want to take with Goats On The Road. We’re still backpackers and travelers, but now we’re focused on turning travel into a sustainable lifestyle. We want to show you that your trip doesn’t have to end! We plan to write more about being location independent and making money on the road, inspiring you through our stories, videos, and informational articles.
We also started our GoatLife TV series while here, motivated by our friend Darryl. It’s a great way for you to get to know us and see what our lifestyle is like.
Being a digital nomad or working for yourself gives you more free time. You could hit the beach whenever you want or meet friends any day of the week. We’ve enjoyed this lifestyle so much that we just have to share it. It’s really not that hard to do!
We’ve learned that we prefer traveling at a slower pace. Renting an apartment for a month or house-sitting for a few weeks allows us to settle down and work on our website. It also helps us connect with locals, learn about the country (and hopefully the language), cook our own meals, and save money.
Moving to Grenada, house-sitting abroad for the first time, and trying to live off our blog took a lot of courage, but it turned out to be the best decision we could’ve made. Living on the Island of Spice has been an incredible experience, perfect after our adventurous travels through Central Asia and Iran. This little country will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
