During our trip to the Grenadines, we spent 9 nights on the beautiful island of Bequia and would’ve stayed longer if we had more time. Bequia is known for its charming boutique-style hotels. We experienced several places, but the Frangipani Hotel stood out as one of our favorites.
The Frangipani Hotel is famous in this region, partly because it’s owned by the daughter of the former Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It’s also known as a popular spot for yacht enthusiasts and is mentioned in the book “1000 Places to See Before You Die.”
When we arrived early in the morning, the reception staff welcomed us warmly and allowed us to check in early. Despite the steep hike up to our Deluxe Hillside King Room, the effort was rewarded with stunning views of the harbor from our spacious balcony.
Our room exceeded our expectations with its king-size bed, entertainment stand, desk, comfortable seating, and cool stone walls. The double wooden doors led to a large balcony, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee or afternoon rainstorm.
Divided by a tall stone wall, our room featured a dressing area with generous counter space, a closet, a safe, a mini fridge, coffee maker, and kettle. The adjoining bathroom was spacious with a sink, toilet, and shower. Essentials like mosquito spray and mosquito nets were provided, which are crucial in this region.
Despite being near the main road, the room was quiet and private, thanks to the stone walls and a barrier separating us from the neighboring balcony.
The Frangipani Hotel caters to various budgets, offering a range of rooms. The Deluxe Hillside and Air-Conditioned Deluxe rooms on higher ground have spectacular water views. The air-conditioned rooms also feature a four-poster bed with a mosquito net. Closer to the ground are Garden View Rooms with fantastic garden views and similar stone walls. In the original family home above the restaurant, there are five economy rooms with shared bathrooms and the strongest WiFi signal.
Set at the water’s edge, the Frangipani Bar and Restaurant serves delicious lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, their popular BBQ night with live music wasn’t available during our stay, but the lively outdoor bar remained a great spot to meet others.
While the dinner menu might seem pricey, it’s comparable to other options on the island, and the restaurant offers affordable lunch items for dinner. The BBQ and seafood dishes are highly recommended for their taste.
The friendly and welcoming staff made our stay special, even though we visited during the off-season and didn’t meet everyone. The hotel, located right on the water’s edge and along the Belmont Walkway, offers easy access to swimming and strolling.
Rooms are cleaned daily and come with essentials like coffee, tea, and mosquito repellent. WiFi is available in the restaurant and some rooms. The nearby Gingerbread Hotel and Vintages Bequia wine shop, owned by the same family, also offer great food and wine selections.
Room rates vary by season. In winter (December 15 – April 30), AC Deluxe rooms are $275, Deluxe Hillside rooms range from $205 to $235, Garden View rooms from $180 to $210, and Economy rooms from $75 to $85. In summer (May 1 – December 14), AC Deluxe rooms are $220, Deluxe Hillside rooms range from $145 to $205, Garden View rooms from $110 to $145, and Economy rooms from $55 to $65. There’s a summer special offering the 7th night free if you stay for 6 nights. Rates include 10% VAT and a 10% service charge.
After our 5-night stay, we were reluctant to leave. The Frangipani’s perfect location, spacious modern rooms, and delicious restaurant food made our stay enjoyable. Its proximity to the Belmont Walkway, Port Elizabeth, shopping, and other restaurants added to the convenience. Plus, the hotel accommodates all budgets, which is rare in the Caribbean.
Though not directly on the beach, the pier right out front was perfect for us, offering direct water access. Some might prefer a sandy beach, but we found the pier to be a major advantage.
