Top Places to Stay in Playa del Carmen: Prime Locations & Lodging Options

In this guide, we’ll explore where to stay in Playa del Carmen, covering various neighborhoods and some of the best resorts and hotels. Located just an hour from Cancun Airport, Playa del Carmen is a top destination in Mexico, known for its pedestrian-only 5th Avenue filled with shopping, dining, cafes, coworking spaces, and nightlife options.

Playa del Carmen boasts several beaches with plenty of sun and sand. For those seeking adventure, activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and skydiving add excitement to any visit. You’ll find more than enough to keep you busy here.

After spending six weeks in Playa del Carmen as a digital nomad, I explored different neighborhoods to help you choose the perfect place to stay.

Neighborhoods and Accommodations in Playa del Carmen

Playacar: This upscale, gated community features a world-class golf course and several resorts. Divided into two phases, Playacar is a residential area popular among expats. Phase one is mainly homes with a few hotels, while phase two hosts the Hard Rock Golf Club and top resorts. Playacar is safe, quiet, family-friendly, and even has some Mayan ruins on the beach. It’s a bit isolated from 5th Avenue’s chaos but still easily accessible.

Centro: The heart of Playa del Carmen, Centro stretches from the beach to the freeway and north to Constituyentes Avenue. It houses the main bus station, ferry pier, and collectivo vans, making it convenient for exploring other areas. The vibrant 5th Avenue starts here, bustling with shops, restaurants, and bars. Centro also features parks, supermarkets, and famous nightclubs, offering excellent shopping, dining, and nightlife. You’ll find many hotels, including all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels.

Gonzalo Guerrero: An extension of Centro, this neighborhood runs from Constituyentes Avenue to Calle 38. It’s known for Playa Mamitas beach and various sports facilities. La Quinta continues here but is quieter compared to Centro. It’s a popular area with various accommodation options.

Zazil-Ha: Located between Calle 38 to CTM Avenue, Zazil-Ha is a localized neighborhood favored by expats and digital nomads. You’ll find beach clubs, local restaurants, and chilled-out bars. La Quinta becomes a bike path here, ideal for rides or jogs. Though small, Zazil-Ha offers several hotels for those wanting to stay close to the action but away from the crowds.

Colosio: Stretching from CTM Avenue to Calle 110 and primarily residential, Colosio includes accommodation options close to the beach. The neighboring Nicte-Ha is a quiet area with several cool hotel options, perfect for a peaceful vacation.
