Mindo, Ecuador: Your Ultimate Travel Companion

Nestled between the western slopes of the Andes mountains and the Choco-Andean forest, Mindo, Ecuador is a breathtaking tropical cloud forest that offers plenty to keep you entertained for a few days. Whether you’re into adventure, birdwatching, or just relaxing, Mindo has something for everyone.

Although small, Mindo has a lot to offer including great restaurants and fantastic accommodations. After our three-night stay, we wished we had planned for a longer visit. Without a doubt, Mindo became one of my favorite spots in Ecuador.

You can see quite a lot in Mindo in just a few days, as the town is easy to navigate. Many visitors take taxis to reach natural sites outside the center, but walking is highly recommended to fully appreciate the area’s natural beauty. For instance, it takes about 30-45 minutes to walk from the center to the Mindo Garden restaurant, depending on your pace and the weather. On our walks, we often encountered fascinating wildlife, including a family of monkeys.

A must-do activity is the cable car ride, even if you have a fear of heights. Powered by a small motor, it whizzes you across the dense canopy for about half a kilometer, 152 meters above ground. The view is stunning, and at Bosque Protector Mindo-Nambillo you can hike to see various waterfalls and catch glimpses of birds like the toucan. Remember to bring your bathing suit, drinking water, and sturdy shoes.

Birdwatching in Mindo is incredible with over 500 species of tropical birds. Even if you’re not an avid birder, you’ll enjoy spotting them while having coffee, wandering from town to the forest, or relaxing at the butterfly sanctuary. For those keen on a more focused birdwatching experience, Casa Amarilla offers access to five trails for a small fee. Other private reserves near Mindo also offer excellent birdwatching opportunities.

A unique experience in Mindo is a night walk with a knowledgeable guide to spot nocturnal animals like frogs, snakes, and kinkajous. This 1.5-hour tour includes gear and transportation.

The Mariposario is another highlight, where you can spend hours surrounded by colorful butterflies and hummingbirds. Although the entry fee is a bit steep, the experience is worth it.

For a more relaxed way to enjoy the cloud forest, try the chairlift at Minjoy Park. Unlike the cable car, this slow 20-minute ride allows you to take in the scenery at a leisurely pace. Minjoy Park, a family-friendly place, also offers zorbing, a playground, and nature trails.

For yoga enthusiasts, the Airbnb host where we stayed frequently runs yoga retreats in a beautiful pavilion surrounded by the cloud forest. Arranging a class with Wendy, a long-time yoga instructor, is highly recommended.

When it comes to accommodations, staying in a nature-surrounded place is a great experience. Terrabambu Lodge, where we stayed, offered peaceful surroundings, great hiking trails, and excellent amenities like laundry service and continental breakfast.

For dining, Mindo has some top spots but be mindful of their erratic hours. Recommended restaurants include Arepera, a Venezuelan spot serving amazing arepas, El Quetzal for chocolate treats, and Caskaffesu, a great place for breakfast by the river. The Food Studio and Restaurante Pizzeria El Tigrillo are also highly rated.

Travelers should note that Mindo is a tropical cloud forest, so rain is common. Be sure to pack appropriate gear like a rain jacket, waterproof shoes, and bug spray. Carry cash as ATMs might be unreliable, and learning some basic Spanish will be helpful since English is not widely spoken.

In terms of safety, Mindo is generally safe, but it’s wise to have travel insurance in case of any accidents or emergencies, especially considering the nearest hospital is in Quito.

To get to Mindo, the Flor Del Valle buses from La Ofelia Station in Quito are a good option, though the ride can be windy. Taxi services to and from Mindo can vary in price, so it’s best to get recommendations from locals for fair rates.

With all its natural beauty and activities, Mindo should be more than just a day trip from Quito. Spending a few nights there allows you to truly appreciate its serene landscapes and unique wildlife. I hope this guide encourages you to take your time and explore all that Mindo has to offer.
