Key West, located at the end of the Florida Keys in South Florida, is an amazing island destination. From state parks and kayaking to sunset cruises and pub crawls, there’s truly something for everyone!
I lived in Key West for four months and had an unforgettable time. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed about planning your trip, I’m here to help with a list of my favorite activities for both first-time visitors and locals.
Key West is one of the best places to visit in Florida, especially in January. Whether you’re after a busy day or a relaxing one, here are some of the top attractions you shouldn’t miss:
1. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park: Perfect for a sunny day outdoors. The park offers great trails for hiking and biking, a historic fort, and superb snorkeling opportunities. The water is crystal clear, making it a fantastic spot for marine life viewing.
2. Local Art Scene in Old Town Key West: Stroll along Whitehead Street and Duval Street to explore numerous galleries and studios. Many artists’ works are inspired by the island, making them unique souvenirs.
3. Eco-Kayak Adventures: Paddle through mangroves and seagrass habitats teeming with plant, bird, fish, and animal life. Guided tours are available if you want more in-depth knowledge about the ecosystem.
4. Duval Street Dining: Try fresh seafood paired with a Key West cocktail. Popular dishes include conch salad, fritters, chowder, and even lobster rolls. Some recommended spots are DJ’s Clam Shack, Bagatelle, Caroline’s Cafe, and Ocean Grill and Bar.
5. Sunset Cruises: Hop on a sunset cruise to experience the breathtaking colors of a Key West sunset. Some cruises offer great food and open bars, and the crew members are usually fantastic.

9. Drag Shows: A Key West classic! Bourbon St. Pub and Parade Lounge offer fun shows and spirited performances.
10. Hemingway House: Visit the museum and former home of Ernest Hemingway to see artifacts from his life and career. A walking tour includes stops at notable Hemingway-related locations around town.
11. Fort East Martello: This historic fort is now a museum showcasing interesting artifacts and art exhibits. It’s also home to the infamous haunted Robert The Doll.
12. Popular Beaches: Smathers Beach and Higgs Beach are great for sunbathing, snorkeling, and water sports, with plenty of amenities to enjoy.
13. Sloppy Joe’s Bar: An iconic spot where Ernest Hemingway used to frequent. It’s a great place for live music and dancing.
