Shanghai offers an incredible variety of activities and attractions! Over the past 14 months of living and traveling in China, we’ve visited this enormous city 10 times and always find something new to love. With over 23 million residents from diverse backgrounds, Shanghai is a fascinating blend of modern and traditional.
Here’s our list of the Top 10 Things To Do In Shanghai:
1. Walk The Bund: This riverside promenade along the Huangpu River is the perfect spot to catch a view of Shanghai’s iconic skyline. On the Bund’s side of the river, you’ll see historic buildings from the era when the French and British occupied this port. A nighttime stroll here is a must.
2. Visit Jing’an Temple: Nestled on West Nanjing Road, surrounded by modern skyscrapers, this Buddhist temple offers a tranquil escape. The entrance fee is just 30 RMB, and the moment you step inside, you’ll experience a peaceful contrast to the bustling city outside.
3. Wander Around The Old Town: Many Chinese cities have an old town area, and Shanghai’s is a gem. Around Remin and Zhonghua streets, near the Bund, you’ll find crumbling buildings, beautiful architecture, and locals going about their daily lives. It’s a great place to explore, meet friendly people, and snap some fantastic photos.
4. Go Up The Oriental Pearl Tower: This 468-meter-high tower offers stunning views, especially at night when the view of the Bund’s old buildings is spectacular. The entrance fee is 100 RMB.
5. Explore the Laocheng Huang Miao Area: Though touristy, this area is worth a visit for its unique Chinese artwork, sculptures, and woodwork. Spend the day wandering around the pond and the Yuyuan Garden (Garden of Contentment). Entrance to the garden is 40 RMB.
6. Eat Dumplings: Shanghai is famous for its xiaolongbao dumplings, filled with meat and a tasty broth inside. Whether steamed or fried, these dumplings are a must-try. We recommend Yang’s Dumplings at 97 Huanghe Road (People’s Square) and the neighboring shop at 99.
7. Party in The French Concession: This upscale area is lined with beautiful trees, high-end shops, and excellent restaurants and bars. While it might strain your budget, it promises a memorable time.
8. Visit the Pedestrian Walking Street: Quiet during the day, this street comes alive at night around 8:00 PM with street performers, dancers, and neon-lit buildings. Walk all the way down to the Bund to wrap up your evening with a stroll along this famous strip.
9. Take a Boat Ride: Instead of the metro, hop on one of the many boats crossing the Huangpu River daily. It’s a more scenic and interesting way to travel between riverbanks.
10. Dance on The Streets: After sundown, you’ll find groups of people gathering to dance. Led by a dance instructor and accompanied by Chinese music from large speakers, these spontaneous street dance sessions are a joy to watch or join.
